UNISON urges Ofgem to act on customer bills

Britain’s energy regulator Ofgem must act to lower customer bills and secure a just transition for energy workers, following record rises in energy company profits, UNISON said today.

The union is calling on the regulator to intervene and reduce high energy prices for consumers. It said that the scale of energy company profits is indicative of an imbalance in the market, and immediate action must be taken to rectify the situation.

UNISON national secretary for energy Donna Rowe-Merriman said: “In the cost of living crisis, there is an urgent need for Ofgem to intervene to ensure that consumers are not drowning in debt.”

UNISON is also calling for urgent collaboration from all energy companies in the UK to deliver major investment across the sector, to ensure a just transition for energy workers as the country moves to combat climate change.

Ms Rowe-Merriman noted: “As the energy sector continues to evolve, the union’s call for regulatory intervention and collaboration among energy companies marks a significant step towards a fairer and more sustainable future.

“By prioritising the fair pricing for consumers and a fair outcome for energy workers, the UK can pave the way for a just transition that benefits all.

“UNISON believes that a just transition plan is not only necessary for workers’ rights, but also for the long-term stability and success of the energy sector.”

UNISON reacts to government energy package for businesses and public sector bodies

Commenting on the government’s plan to help cut energy costs for businesses, charities and public sector organisations, UNISON general secretary Christina McAnea said:

“This package is too little too late. Public bodies are still vulnerable because of a general lack of cash.

“Many schools, care homes, councils and hospitals have already had to make tough decisions, selling properties or cutting staff to afford their energy bills.

“All this could have been avoided. Better management of the UK’s energy market and an ambitious programme to make public buildings, businesses and homes energy efficient would have made the world of difference.”

Fund energy help by taxing firms making most from crisis, says UNISON

Responding to the government’s energy plan announced today (Thursday), UNISON general secretary Christina McAnea said:

“At long last, the government has acted. A bill freeze should have happened months ago. Instead, millions have endured sleepless nights terrified of the winter ahead.

“The companies raking in billions from soaring energy costs should pay their share. Another windfall tax would be fairer than handing huge debts to future generations.

“Putting bills on ice isn’t enough though. Bills will still be almost double the amount they were last year.

“Long-term energy efficiency measures are also needed, especially for older homes. Then the poorest won’t keep going without just to keep the lights on.”
