PM’s policy wheezes are last desperate roll of the dice from a government on borrowed time

Commenting on Rishi Sunak’s speech today to the Conservative Party conference, UNISON general secretary Christina McAnea said:

“The country is broken after 13 years of poor government. The prime minister’s focus should be on fixing the mess created by his ministers and those of the four earlier woeful Conservative administrations.

“Under his party the UK has become an international embarrassment. People have been pummelled by a cost of living crisis no one in government appears to have a handle on and public services are in a state of permanent crisis.

“These policy wheezes are a last desperate roll of the dice from a government that knows it’s living on borrowed time.

“There is but one solution. That’s for Rishi Sunak to call an election now and let the people elect a government able to put right the many wrongs of the past decade.”

Public sector pay cuts are the worst possible response

Responding to reports that public sector pay awards could be capped at 2% in the coming months, UNISON general secretary Christina McAnea said today (Tuesday): “Holding down pay for public sector staff is the worst possible response. This shows a government with no ideas, nor a grasp of the reality of people’s lives.

“The NHS, care and other key services already have a workforce crisis. Many more staff will walk if they know there’s no prospect of a decent pay rise for years.

“That means patients will wait longer, older people won’t get the care they need, crime rates will rise and education will suffer. Everyone suffers if communities don’t have basic services.

“If Rishi Sunak is to hold true to his day-one promise as Prime Minister to strengthen the NHS, he needs to deliver better pay. That goes for all public services.”

New prime minister must improve pay if he wants a stronger NHS

Responding to the speech by new prime minister Rishi Sunak as he arrived at Downing Street today (Tuesday), UNISON general secretary Christina McAnea said:

“No one can be under any illusion about the challenges that lie ahead. The previous prime minister has certainly made the situation a whole lot worse.

“If Rishi Sunak really wants the NHS and other public services to become stronger, they must have the resources needed to tackle the growing workforce crises.

“That starts with giving health employees a second pay rise to stop experienced staff from heading for the door. Unless the government acts soon, a strike across the NHS looks increasingly likely this winter.”

No more leadership musical chairs, it’s time for a general election

Commenting on the news that Rishi Sunak is to become the next prime minister, UNISON general secretary Christina McAnea said: “The depth of the crisis facing the UK is too serious to be left to the Conservatives to solve.

“Changing leaders won’t make a shred of difference. The shambles of the past few weeks proves the Tories are no longer fit to govern.

“It’s time to let voters choose a new government in Westminster. The public wants a general election. They’ve had enough of the musical chairs at the top of government. If Rishi Sunak is so confident he has the answers to the UK’s problems, he should go to the country now.”
