A meeting of the TUC's public service unions yesterday (Monday) agreed to extend the TUC's negotiations with the government on public service pensions.
TUC Deputy General Secretary Frances O'Grady will visit the North East today (Thursday) as part of a nationwide tour to see how public spending cuts are affecting workers and communities across the country.
Speaking at a meeting of the Police Federation of England and Wales in London today (Wednesday) TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber will warn police officers that spending cuts will make their jobs much more difficult.
Addressing a rally of around 2,000 police officers at the Methodist Central Hall, Westminster, TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber will say:
“The challenges you face are similar to those facing millions of other dedicated public servants in our schools, hospitals, universities, prisons, courts, local authorities, job centres and fire stations.
Commenting after a meeting today (Wednesday) between the TUC, rail unions and Transport Secretary Philip Hammond, TUC Deputy General Secretary Frances O'Grady said:
“Today the unions representing workers at Bombardier Transportation and the wider rail industry pressed the case for the government to reverse its decision to award the contract for Thameslink rolling stock to Siemens, the German train manufacturer.

“Today's headline unemployment figures show some encouraging news – employment is up 50,000 and unemployment is down 26,000 on the quarter, which is very welcome.
Reacting to new Treasury estimates for the costs of future public sector pensions liabilities published today (Wednesday), TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said:
