Chancellor’s economic strategy is going horribly wrong
Commenting on the first estimate of GDP growth published today (Wednesday) for the last quarter of 2011, which showed the economy shrunk by 0.2 percentage points, TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said:

GDP per person is likely to fall in 2012 and will not return to pre-recession levels until 2016, the TUC says today (Wednesday) ahead of the Office for National Statistics' (ONS) first estimate of economic growth in the last quarter of 2011.
Consultations provide opportunity to make progress on issues of process
Responding to the Scottish Government’s referendum consultation, Grahame Smith said: “STUC will consult its affiliated organisations on the substance of this, and the UK Government’s consultation, before making a detailed response to both. Taken together these exercises provide the opportunity to resolve issues of process so that the real referendum debate can move forward. However, such progress will require flexibility from both Governments and a marked improvement in the overall political tone.
