Northern TUC comment on Lord Heseltine’s visit to encourage growth in the region

Following Lord Heseltine's visit to the North East today to encourage local businesses and entrepreneurs to bid for cash from the Government's flagship £1.4billion Regional Growth Fund (RGF) Kevin Rowan, Northern TUC Regional Secretary said: “We welcome Heseltine's invitation for businesses to take advantage of the regional Growth Fund. There are key sectors in the north east with potential for significant growth, new developments such as offshore wind manufacturing, Science City and PTEC in County Durham, as well as an excellent base for tourism and there is also the potential to grow other sectors where the region has performed well; the automotive industries, subsea industries and the chemicals and process sector can all expand in the years ahead.

Rowntree report echoes union concerns about in-work poverty, says TUC

Commenting on a new report published today (Monday) by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, which shows that the number of children living in poverty in working households has increased to 2.1 million – the highest on record, TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said: “This important report confirms the last government's success in reducing the number of children in poverty, but it also shows that unions are right to be concerned about in-work poverty.

TUC wary of Frank Field poverty review

Responding to the Frank Field review into poverty, The Foundation Years, published today (Friday), TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said: “There are some welcome ideas in the report, and Frank Field is right to emphasise the importance of children's early years, and we agree that anti-poverty policy should pay more attention to the health and well-being of babies and toddlers.
