The Northern TUC will once again be joined by unions and in the region at an event to commemorate Workers Memorial Day on Thursday April 28th. More than 70 people will attend a seminar at Sunderland Civic Centre followed by a wreath laying ceremony in the Memorial Garden, and then make the walk through the city carrying trade union banners to Sunderland Minster for a Memorial Service and banner blessing in memory of those who have lost their lives at, or through work.

Today's employment statistics from the ONS are bleak reading for the North East as despite a national rise in employment of 17,000 the North East has bucked the trend with unemployment rising by 11,000 in the region so the figure now stands at 10.4% - the worst in the country.
Commenting on the latest unemployment figures published today (Wednesday) by the Office for National Statistics, TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said:
