Unionlearn celebrates success in Yorkshire and Humber region

Unionlearn with Yorkshire and the Humber TUC held its annual celebration of trade union achievements around learning and skills yesterday (15 October 2009) at the Royal Hotel in Hull.

This conference was aimed at celebrating achievements and looking forward. Around 150 union delegates and partners will attend the conference, which, as well as celebrating their successes, will provide them with information about the impact of the current economic downturn, new policies and initiatives/developments in learning and skills.

Tony hailed a winner!

Merseytravel union learning representative (ULR) Tony Norbury has been awarded the regional individual National Training Award for for the positive impact his individual training journey has had on the taxi and private hire sector. Tony, from Tranmere on the Wirral, received his award from North West Tonight presenter Ranvir Singh at the Palace Hotel, Manchester on Tuesday 13th October.As as a result, he will go on to represent the North West at the National Training Awards (NTA) in London on the 10th December.

‘Lost skills’ in the spotlight on World Day for Decent Work

The Northern TUC is to use World Day for Decent Work (WDDW), which takes place today (Wednesday), to highlight the many skills that are currently being lost to the region’s economy.
At a conference being held today (Wednesday) at Newcastle City Library, delegates will hear about the migrant workers and refugees across the North East who are now working in low-paid, unskilled jobs, but who previously worked as highly skilled professionals before they came to the UK.

Workers and management from Liverpool John Lennon Airport, attended a unionlearn reception at the TUC conference (Wednesday 16 September) in Liverpool’s Convention Centre where they told Pat McFadden MP, Business, Innovation and Skills Minister, how their trade union and management are working together to build the skills base in their workplace.
