Supporting Learners – Issue 6

This is the sixth in a series of newsletters that has been produced to keep unionlearn staff, unions, project workers, union learning reps (ULRs) and other reps up to speed about: developments in the area of a publicly funded careers service that will affect existing structures and networks, how unionlearn is responding to the changes to ensure that union learners at all levels receive the best possible information and advice to help them progress in learning and work and other news, developments and resources that will help support members as learners.

Education is for all not just for Rita

Award winning actress Julie Walters visited the GMB led Learning Resource centre at Hollingdean waste depot in Brighton , the visit was arranged by GMB ULR Wes Lee Emond who described Julie as “an inspiration to many people. “ The centre is run in partnership with Brighton and Hove City Council and offers a wide range of courses to council employees, ULRS play a key role encouraging and supporting hard to reach learners back into education.

Taking Learning into the Community – The Trade Union Way

The Community and Trade Union Learning Centre on the Olympic Park celebrated World Book Day by taking learning into Marylands Children’s Surestart Centre. Staff from the centre, run by unionlearn with Southern and Eastern Region TUC ran two workshops for children and parents, focusing on numeracy and literacy skills. They also organized a book swap club and distributed Quick Reads – short books for adults.
