The number of people working ‘extreme' unpaid overtime of more than ten hours a week increased by 14,000 to nearly 900,000 last year, according a new analysis of official statistics published today (Friday) by the TUC to mark Work Your Proper Hours Day (WYPHD).
The TUC today (Thursday) welcomed the introduction of measures for workers suffering from asbestos-related diseases, but criticised the Government's decision not to reintroduce compensation for those who are diagnosed with pleural plaques.

These figures show that unemployment was static over the Christmas period. Given that many were predicting that joblessness would still be rising, this is a vindication of the Government's extra investment in support for the unemployed.
The TUC will be looking for three key signs that the jobs market is improving when the February unemployment figures are released by the Office of National Statistics later this morning (Wednesday).
Commenting on the inflation figures for January published today (Tuesday), TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said:
'The inflation message is don't panic. The rise today has more to do with what was happening a year ago than anything new in the economy, and is likely to fall back to its target range in due course. The real threat remains a double-dip recession, and boosting jobs and growth remain the most important priorities.”
