The first international public opinion polling commissioned by the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) – the Brussels-based global union representing 175 million union members across the world – shows deep uncertainty, fear and political disempowerment across half the G20 economies, six European countries and four emerging economies.
Commenting on reports of poor working conditions faced by unpaid stewards of the Diamond Jubilee, TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said:
The situation faced by trade unionists across the world grew steadily worse in 2011, according to the annual survey of trade union rights violations published today (Wednesday) by the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC).
Commenting on today's announcement that the BAE Systems site on Scotswood Road in Newcastle will be closed, resulting in 600 job losses Kevin Rowan, Regional Secretary of the Northern TUC said:

More than three million people working in small companies with fewer than 10 staff will be turned into second-class citizens if government supporters of the Beecroft report get their way, according to TUC analysis published today (Thursday) as unions launch the Employee Rights Stop Employment Wrongs campaign.
Launching the campaign at a photo opportunity featuring a backwards clock face and Victorian-dressed workers, TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said:
“We have made steady progress in the UK in securing a floor of minimum rights at work for all. But they are hardly generous. The OECD shows that among the world's 36 most prosperous countries, only workers in the USA have poorer rights than UK employees.
With just days to go until the Diamond Jubilee weekend (taking place from Saturday 2 June until Tuesday 5 June) the TUC is today (Thursday) calling on employers to do the right thing and ensure that workers do not miss out on the unique four-day celebrations.
